I was stunned by the decision of the U.S. appeals court in
California that a writer may deliberately misquote someone as
long as the sense is not substantially changed (PRESS, Aug. 21).
To the extent that it makes allowances for the normal failings
of people who are trying to do an accurate job of reporting,
perhaps the ruling has value. But if it encourages the idea that
deliberate misquotation is acceptable, then it should be decried
by journalists of integrity everywhere.
